Co-Creation and Open Science: Perspectives on Participatory Methods and Transparency

Our IANUS WP5 partners (EUR, RU, RCL, CEUT, ISI, KIT), developed the WP5 deliverable and its digital handout, which explores how co-creation and participatory methods shape Open Science, particularly within the IANUS project. It presents Open Science as a shift toward greater inclusivity, transparency, and public engagement, ensuring that research aligns with societal needs. Instead of being just a set of tools, Open Science is framed as a conceptual approach that integrates participation and accountability into the research process.

Using the “window” metaphor, the document describes Open Science as a two-way interaction: the public gains insight into scientific processes, while researchers become more attuned to societal concerns. Through participatory methods such as citizen science, collaborative decision-making, and stakeholder engagement, Open Science aims to democratize knowledge production.

In this deliverable and digital handout the following key themes are explored:

  • Openness as Participation: Public engagement enhances research by incorporating diverse perspectives, ensuring that science is not conducted in isolation but responds to real-world needs. However, effective participation requires careful planning to balance inclusivity, stakeholder representation, and meaningful involvement.
  • Openness as Transparency: Making research accessible through open data, open-access publishing, and preregistration strengthens public trust and accountability. However, transparency must be managed thoughtfully, considering ethical concerns such as confidentiality, misinformation risks, and accessibility.
  • Participatory Research Methods: Rather than introducing entirely new techniques, participatory research adapts existing methods to foster inclusivity. Projects that prioritize continuous feedback and community engagement tend to have more sustainable societal impact.
  • Conflicts of Interest and Ethical Risks: Open Science faces challenges such as funding biases, selective reporting, and ethical concerns in dual-use research. Strategies like open peer review and transparent funding disclosures help mitigate these risks while maintaining research integrity.
  • Evaluating Participatory Methods: The deliverable proposes assessment frameworks like the Participatory Impact Pathways Analysis (PIPA) and Social Impact Assessment (SIAMPI) to measure the societal impact of co-creation initiatives.

The WP5 deliverable emphasizes that Open Science requires ongoing reflexivity, adaptability, and ethical considerations to maintain trust and relevance. While transparency fosters credibility, superficial openness (“open-washing”) can be misleading. Effective Open Science requires genuine public engagement, thoughtful communication, and long-term commitment to participatory research.
