On May 13th and 14th, IANUS and its sister projects POIESIS and VERITY joined forces in holding a very successful final conference on “Building supportive policy frameworks for fostering trust in science” at Talk C.E.C., Brussels.
The first day kicked off with a powerful keynote on “Fostering Trust In Science” from Michael Arentoft, Head of the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation Unit of the European Commission. Following, session “Building bridges, strengthening trust,” saw EC Officers Georgios Papanagnou and Wainer Lusoli, along with the sister project coordinators, welcoming the participants and briefly presenting the event.
After formal presentations, it was time to get down to business. IANUS coordinator Hub Zwart and fellow coordinators Tine Ravn of POIESIS, and Agata Gurzawska of VERITY presented their projects’ research and main findings, all the while Former European Commission Official and Chairman of the MLE Science for Policy Dr. Rene Von Schomberg commented and provided valuable feedback.
Session “Advancing Policy, Implementing Recommendations: IANUS, POIESIS, and VERITY’s three-year journey,” brought together policy-makers Juliana Chaves Chaparro (UNESCO), Anastasia Deligkiaouri (JRC), Jim Dratwa (EC), Suzanne Dumouchel (EOSC/OPERAS), Shaofeng Hu (UNESCO), Georgios Papanagnou (EC), and Maciej Woszczyk (NCBR/INSPIRING ERA), who provided deep insight into how policy frameworks can meaningfully support and strengthen trust in science.
Finally, the last session of Day 1 was the World Café, presented by Eleni Spyrakou of POIESIS and Kalypso Iordanou of IANUS and smoothly moderated by Lisa Häberlein of EUREC and VERITY. The session saw Hendrik Berghäuser and Amalia Kallergi from IANUS, Gabor Szüdi and Evren Yalaz from VERITY, Simon Fuglasang and Richard Woolley from POIESIS facilitating multiple co-creative the discussions in 6 different tables of the World Café, providing interesting stimuli to facilitate open discussions around Trust In Science, impact and sustainability. The day concluded with brief summaries from each table’s rapporteur, opening the floor for a collective discussion on impact and sustainability.
The second day brought forward powerful conclusions and reflections on the World Cafè. During session “From the World Café to Policy-Making”, moderated by Hendrik Berghäuser (IANUS) and Declan Kirrane (Science Summit, United Nations), rapporteurs from each table shared deeper takeaways from the previous day’s discussions, inspiring insightful commentary and feedback.
Finally, the conference concluded on an inspiring note with artist Miriam Barton unveiling her visually stunning graphic summary of the event: a beautiful infographic highlighting the collective wisdom and discussions that animated this exciting event.
Now that the IANUS project is ending, we are incredibly proud of the collaboration among our sister projects, bound by our commitment to strengthening Trust In Science, Research and Innovation. We extend our gratitude to all that were present, from contributors to participants, for two incredible days of open dialogue and recommendations. What a great journey! We look forward to more exciting collaborations in and beyond the IANUS project.
